Scalp-plasty (Scalp Reduction)
Scalp-plasty, also called scalp reduction or alopecia reduction is a surgical hair restoration procedure in which bald areas of scalp are removed and hair-bearing scalp is mobilized upward to replace it. Depending on the patient’s individual characteristics, scalp-reduction may be performed as the only hair restoration procedure or in combination with hair transplantation or other advanced techniques in order to achieve a desired aesthetic effect.
Because of advancements in hair transplantation techniques, reduction procedures are used less commonly today. Nonetheless, when performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon on highly selected patients, scalp reduction can be a very effective method of hair restoration for patients with pattern baldness or other forms of hair loss.
Unique among hair restoration doctors in Canada, Dr. Korman is a fully qualified surgeon, board-certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. In addition, Dr. Korman trained under, and continues to work in consultation with Dr. Martin Unger who is generally regarded as the most experienced scalp surgeon in the world. These qualifications allow Dr. Korman to consider the entire range of restorative options that might be appropriate for each individual patient.

Flaps, Tissue Expansion and Other Advanced Options
Because of advancements in hair transplantation, scalp flap surgery and tissue expansion are rarely indicated in the treatment of male and female pattern hair loss. These more advanced techniques require much more extensive surgery and are now most commonly used in situations of severe scalp injury or trauma. Dr. Korman’s advanced training and board-certification in head and neck surgery gives him a perspective on this type of work which is unique among hair restoration physicians in Canada.

Moustache, Beard and Body Hair Restoration
Facial hair transplantation can restore or thicken a moustache and beard with that have unacceptable density due to genetics or have been scarred by precious surgery or trauma. Donor hair usually comes from the scalp, which provides the best match of color and texture. Following a transplant, the relocated hairs are permanent, and will grow just like original facial hair
Body hair transplantation can replace or augment hair most commonly in the chest, abdomen, armpits or pubic areas. As in the face, the lack of hair may be due to genetics, or previous surgery or injury or hair removal procedures and the donor hairs usually come from the scalp. Once transplanted, the donor hairs are permanent and will continue to grow as they did in the scalp and therefore need to be trimmed on a regular basis.

Corrective Procedures
Hair restoration has evolved dramatically over its 50-plus year history. Nonetheless, some patients treated with now obsolete large punch-graft techniques have been left with an unnatural, “corn-row” appearance. In other situations, improper hairline design or graft placement by less qualified surgeons or inadequate density or coverage may have led to unacceptable results. Scarring from previous face-lifts, scalp reductions or other cosmetic procedures may need to be camouflaged.
Dr. Korman is able to critically evaluate previous work and determine what techniques are most appropriate to restore the most natural, cosmetically acceptable appearance possible with the minimal amount of additional expense and inconvenience. Depending on available donor reserves, existing grafts may be augmented with new, smaller or more dense transplants. In other cases, scars may be removed and closed using plastic surgery techniques, or previously transplanted plugs may be removed and re-used using more modern methods.
